Past, Present, & Future Research
I recently published my second monograph, Out of his Mind, with Manchester University Press. The text details the lives and experiences of men deemed mad in the nineteenth century.
I am currently working on a research project on the mental trauma of Victorian soldiers. This research is generously supported by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC). This funding helped hire students to transcribe thousands of military Court Martial charts and identify dozens of military memoirs available online. All of this work is available here.
My next project hopes to explore the lives of Victorian veterans who fell on hard times when they attempted to reintegrate into civilian life
My first book, London Clubland, was the first academic study of the gentlemen's clubs of London. Thus far my research has largely centred on masculinity and culture, though I am always drawn to new ideas and areas of research.
